Lesson 1.1: The Why and How

This lesson is all about understanding the two most important things: why you should even care about Canva, and how to get it on your phone.

Why Canva? Simple Reasons Why It’s Perfect for You

If you’re in Kenya and want to start a side hustle or small business, Canva is your best friend. Here’s why:

  1. It’s FREE: You don’t need to spend any money to get started. All the tools we’ll use in this course are in the free version. This means you can create products and start earning without any starting capital.

  2. It’s on your phone: Most people in Kenya are using their phones to do business. Canva works perfectly on your Android or iPhone, so you don’t need an expensive computer. You can design products from anywhere—whether you’re at home, on the bus, or at your local cyber.

  3. It’s super easy: You don’t need to be a graphic designer. Canva’s tools are simple. It’s like a digital art class for total beginners. If you can tap, drag, and drop, you can use Canva.

  4. You can create products to sell: As a small business, you can design things that people actually want to buy, like invitation cards for a birthday, posters for an event, or calendars. You can sell these designs to your friends, family, or online.

How to Get the App on Your Phone

Getting the app is the first step. It’s just like downloading any other app.

  • For Android phones:

    1. Open the Google Play Store app.

    2. Tap on the search icon (it looks like a magnifying glass).

    3. Type in “Canva” and press search.

    4. Find the official Canva app and tap the green “Install” button.

    5. Wait for the download to finish. Once it’s done, you’ll see a new Canva icon on your phone’s screen.

  • For iPhones and iPads:

    1. Open the App Store app.

    2. Tap on the search tab at the bottom right.

    3. Type in “Canva” and press search.

    4. Find the official Canva app and tap the “Get” button (or the cloud icon with a down arrow). You may need to use your Face ID, Touch ID, or password to confirm.

    5. Wait for the download to finish. The app icon will appear on your phone’s screen.
