Lesson 2.1: The Power of Templates
Templates are your best friend in Canva. They are pre-made designs that you can easily change to fit your needs. Think of them like a blank coloring book page—the outline is already there, and all you have to do is add your own colors and details. Using templates is the fastest way to create a professional-looking design even if you have zero design skills.
How to Find and Use Free Templates
-
Open the App: On the main screen, you’ll see a big section for “Templates.” You can also tap the “Templates” button at the bottom of the screen.
-
Search for What You Need: At the top, tap the search bar and type in what you want to create. For example:
-
“Birthday invitation”
-
“Poster”
-
“Social media post”
-
“Flyer”
-
-
Find a Free Template: As you scroll through the results, remember to look for the little crown icon. You should only choose templates that do not have this icon. There are so many free options that you will easily find one you like.
-
Tap to Open: Once you find a free template you like, just tap on it. It will open in a new workspace where you can start editing.
Customizing a Template (The Fun Part!)
Now that you’ve chosen a template, it’s time to make it your own.
-
Change the Text: Tap on any text you want to change. A keyboard will pop up. You can delete the old text and type in your own words.
-
Tip: When you tap on the text, you’ll see options pop up at the bottom of the screen. You can change the font, size, and color here.
-
-
Change the Photos: Tap on any photo in the template you want to replace. A menu will appear.
-
Tip: Tap the “Replace” button. This will let you choose a photo from your phone’s gallery to put in its place.
-
-
Change the Colors: You can change the color of the background or different shapes in the template.
-
Tip: Tap on the background or a shape. At the bottom of the screen, you’ll see a color square. Tap it and choose a new color from the palette.
-
That’s it! By just changing the text, photos, and colors, you can turn a simple template into a unique design that is perfect for your business.
