Lesson 4.1: The Power of Your Phone
The most powerful tool for your business is the one you are holding right now: your phone. You don’t need a professional website or a big budget to start selling. We’ll start with the platforms you already use every day.
Step 1: Get Your First Sales from Your Network
The easiest way to get your first customers is by starting with your friends, family, and colleagues. They already trust you, and they will be your biggest supporters.
-
Create a Portfolio: Go back to the products you designed in Module 3 (invitations, labels, logos, etc.). Take high-quality screenshots of each design and save them to a new folder on your phone called “My Business Designs.”
-
Use WhatsApp Status: This is your most powerful tool. It’s a free way to advertise to everyone you know.
-
Post your screenshots to your WhatsApp Status.
-
Write a simple, friendly message with each one. For example: “I’ve been designing on Canva and would love to help you with your next event! This is a birthday invitation template I made. It’s affordable and easy to send on WhatsApp.”
-
Add your phone number and let people know they can send you a message to order.
-
-
Use Facebook & Instagram Stories: Post the same screenshots and messages to your Instagram and Facebook Stories. Tell your followers that you are offering an affordable design service. You can even create a simple poll, like “Would you buy this design? Yes/No” to get some engagement.
Step 2: Get a Testimonial
Once you get your first customer, you need to get a testimonial. A testimonial is a review from a happy customer, and it’s the best way to prove to new customers that you are trustworthy and your work is good.
-
Ask for a Review: After you have sent the finished design to your first customer, send them a message and ask for a simple review. For example: “Thank you so much for your order! Could you please send me a short message about your experience? I’d love to use it to get more customers!”
-
Screenshot and Share: When they send you a nice message, take a screenshot of it (make sure you blur their name if you want to keep it private) and post it to your WhatsApp Status and other social media pages. This builds trust with new customers who don’t know you well.
You have now learned how to create products and get your first customers!
